This Week in Chicago

Friday, June 20, 2025 · Issue No. 1

Summer arrives in Chicago like a long-delayed resolution — and suddenly the city is alive in a way that feels earned. This week I've been thinking about how a piano responds to humidity shifts. If your instrument felt sluggish or unstable this spring, the summer heat isn't going to help. A short note on what to watch for is in the Piano Corner below. But first — there is a lot happening this week, and most of it is worth going out for.

Andros Taverna — James Beard-nominated Greek restaurant in Lincoln Square. One of the best rooms in the city, and the lamb is exceptional.

🎁 Subscribers receive a complimentary mezze plate with any dinner reservation this week. Use code FPFCULTURE when booking.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra — Beethoven's Seventh

Thu–Sat · Orchestra Hall · $35–$120

Hiromi Uehara Trio · Jazz Showcase

Fri–Sat · Dearborn Street · $25–$40

Andy's Jazz Club — late night sets

Fri & Sat from 9pm · No cover after 11pm

Chicago summers can push indoor humidity above 60%. At that level, piano action parts swell slightly — keys feel heavier, response feels slower. If your piano sounds or feels different this month, it's likely environmental, not structural. A good humidity control system (we recommend Dampp-Chaser for uprights) will stabilize things year-round. Happy to assess yours at your next tuning.
